HABESHA Black to Our Roots Program
The Black To Our Roots Educational
Tour is a spiritual, cultural, and academic experience
where youth of African descent learn about themselves.
15 students have been selected to participate in the Black
To Our Roots program, where they spend several months
learning about Africa in general, and Ghana specifically,
through workshops, fieldtrips, fundraisers, and community
service projects.
Black To Our Roots assist youth in recognizing and reclaiming
their African identity through extensive research on African
history and culture that they will be able to apply directly
while on location in Ghana, West Africa.
Black To Our Roots culminates with graduates spending
several weeks exploring the beauty of Ghana, to gain first
hand experience about its culture, history and rituals.
HABESHA, Inc. is planning the 3rd Annual “Black
To Our Roots” Educational Tour to Ghana, West Africa.
Youth will be selected from an African History Essay Competition.
The essay topic is “What Africa Means To Me”
Each youth writes a 500-word essay
which answered the following questions:
- Who Am I. (50 words)
- What I know about African history
and culture. (200 words)
- Why I want to go to Africa. (200
words)
- What I expect to learn. (50 words)
Students also submit two letters
of support, one from an educator and one from a community
member.
